Marlayna “Twiggy” Harney
Twiggy was introduced to roller
skating by her mother at the young age of 13 months. She competed in
her first Regional Championships at the age of 5, and competed in her
first National Championships at the age of 12. For the next 11 years,
Twiggy competed at the Regional and National level in all disciplines of
roller skating: Figures/Loops, Dance, Free Skating, Free Dance, Pairs,
and Fours. In 1982, she was selected to perform for the United States
Olympic Committee at the National Sports Festival in Syracuse, New
York.
In addition
to her success as a competitor, Twiggy has earned her Proficiency Gold
Medal Bars in Figures, Loops and Dance skating plus attained Gold Medal
status in Free Skating.
In 1989,
Twiggy started her coaching career and in 1990, she had her first
National champion. Since then, she has gone on to help many skaters
achieve their goals – whether just learning to skate as a beginner, or
becoming a Regional and National Champion. Since 2004, each year
Twiggy’s skaters have completed enough Proficiency Tests to rank her as
one of the top three coaches in the United States. In 2006, Twiggy
earned the status of Advanced Certified Coach (AC3) by the USA Roller
Sports Association. She is currently a member in good standing with USA
Roller Sports (USARS), Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America (SRSTA)
and Society of Roller Skating Teachers of California (SRSTC).
Skating for
Twiggy is a “family affair”. Her husband, Eddie, retired in 2007 after
numerous National Championship titles and is currently the National Meet
Director. Her daughter, Alisa, and son, AJ, are both skaters and have
both won multiple Regional and National titles.
